Allied Irish Banks was formed in 1966 bringing together three distinctive Irish banking traditions. The Provincial Bank, founded in 1825, pioneered branch banking in Ireland, the Royal Bank, established eleven years later, was famous for its mercantile links. The Munster and Leinster, formed in 1885, was the largest of the three banks with the most extensive branch network.
Over the decades, AIB has become an increasingly international organisation; the creation of the branch network in Britain in the Seventies was followed by an investment in America in the Eighties. Allfirst, a wholly owned subsidiary of AIB, is now a major player in the Eastern American market, and is one of America’s top 50 banks. AIB invested in the emerging economy of Poland by taking a majority share holding in Wirlkopolski Bank Kredytowy.
AIB capital Markets have launched joint ventures in Central Europe and in Malaysia and Singapore.
Three decades since its formation, AIB is a dynamic and successful organisation. In 1966, AIB’s aggregate assets were IR£255 million – today the AIB Group has assets of more than IR£42 million. It’s pre-tax profits in 1966 were around IR£2 million – in 1998 they were IR£826 million.
