Reminiscences and Recipes of Bantry

Compiled by Denis Cotter and Edited by John & Sally McKenna.

"A century in the life of a town, it’s people and their food"

This delightful, engaging and amusing book paints a vivid picture of the town of Bantry throughout the 20th century, how it has developed and changed, and the people who made the town the characterful, quixotic place it was and is.

The great characters of the town are remembered – Austin Twomey, Jack Murphy, Fr. Dinny Murphy, Lizzie Rinso, Eety Hurley, Paddy Buttons of Vickery’s and Jack Harrington are just a few of the people brought to life in the various recollections of the town’s past.

By including recipes and reminiscences of the places to eat in and around the town, the book also offers a fascinating glimpse of how things have changed during the century. The book has many wonderful recipes – from brown bread to Zanzibar Prawns, the Bantry Blues breakfast to Bantry Bay Mussels – are both practical & delicious.

This is an insightful, absorbing cookbook, a local history, and a charming story of local food. Everyone from the Bantry area, and visitors to the town, will learn much from the story of how Bantry has changed and evolved during the century.

All proceeds from the sale of this book go towards the development of facilities at Wolfe Tone Park.
